A PRE-REVOLUTIONAY WAR BOND SIGNED BY ANTHONY WAYNE AND HIS WIFE

“MAD” ANTHONY WAYNE (1745-1796).  A famous American Revolution general, Wayne, from Pennsylvania, enlisted in 1775.  He was commissioned a brigadier general in 1777, and fought in the retreat from Canada, the defense of Philadelphia, and the battles of Brandywine and Germantown.  In 1779, he stormed Stony Point and a year later, forestalled Arnold’s betrayal of West Point.  He then fought in the South.  After the Revolution, he farmed his Georgia plantation, and in 1793, marched into the West to put down Native American troubles in the Fallen Timber campaign.

ADS. 2pg. 8” x 12 ¼”. October 26, 1772. Allen Township [Pennsylvania].  An autograph document signed Anty Wayne, Mary Wayne and Anthony Macue at the conclusion.  The bond, in the handwriting of the future General, acknowledges that Anthony Macue is bound to Samuel Macue for the sum of ninety pounds.  Samuel Macue willed Anthony Macue and his family various amount of money.  The document has some staining and folds, and the paraph of the Wayne signature is chipped away.  There is a red wax seal next to the Macue autograph, and there is additional Wayne writing on the verso.  Pre-Revolutionary War Wayne material is scarce.
