ORVILLE WRIGHT SIGNS AN IMAGE OF THE FIRST FLIGHT

ORVILLE WRIGHT (1871-1948). Orville, with his brother Wilbur, designed and flew the first heavier-than-air ship on December 17, 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The twelve second flight, piloted by Orville, covered 120 feet and ended several years of work and trial flights with gliders. The Wrights made four flights that day and patented the machine.

PS. 6 ¼” x 4 ½”. No date. No place. An image of the first flight signed Orville Wright in the lower left corner in blue fountain pen. This image is printed on postcard stock, and shows Orville at the controls of the first-ever flight in 1903 with Wilbur running alongside. The image has a clean vertical fold right down the center of the postcard, and Wright may have done this himself to place it in a return envelope. There is light skipping to the “O” in the signature.
